A good training program should reflect the client’s presentation.
Your health history, training experience, current fitness, injuries, schedule, goals and the activities you want to continue doing all matter.
Balance Athletics brings together progressive strength training, cardiovascular development, mobility and movement, nutrition guidance, recovery and long-term health coaching into one practical approach.
The goal is not simply to work hard.
The goal is to become more capable.
Train for What Matters Outside the Gym
Living in Backcountry and along Colorado’s Front Range makes it easy to appreciate the value of physical capacity.
Hiking. Skiing. Cycling. Traveling. Golf. Pickleball. Time in the mountains. Keeping up with your family. Or simply moving through daily life without wondering whether your body can handle it.
Training should support those experiences.
That means building enough strength, aerobic fitness, mobility, balance and resilience that the things you enjoy remain available to you—not just today, but years from now.
What We Can Work On
The Facility Is Only Part of the Equation
Access to equipment is valuable.
Knowing what to do with it—and how to progress appropriately over months and years—is where coaching becomes important.
Programming matters. Technique matters. Recovery matters. Knowing when to progress, when to modify and when to pull back matters.
After more than 18 years of coaching, my role is not simply to give you exercises. It is to help manage the process.
That includes paying attention to how you move, how you respond to training, what your life currently allows and what needs to change as you progress.
The program fits the person—not the other way around.
Who This Is For
This works particularly well for Backcountry residents who want expert guidance rather than trying to assemble a fitness strategy on their own; have demanding professional or family schedules; want to become stronger and fitter without making fitness their entire identity; are returning to training after time away or managing previous injuries; want to continue hiking, skiing, cycling, traveling, golfing, playing sports or enjoying Colorado; or are thinking seriously about what they want their physical life to look like at 60, 70 and beyond.
Ian Starr
Owner & Coach, Balance Athletics
I’ve been coaching clients full time since 2008 across the domains of strength and conditioning, health coaching and optimization, mobility, nutrition, rehabilitation and general and sport-specific performance.
I combine experience, continuous learning and highly individualized programming to help clients build strength, improve health and develop the physical capacity to pursue the lives they want to live.
Building Physical Reserve
One of the most valuable things you can build as you get older is physical reserve.
Not simply enough strength or endurance to meet the demands of an average day, but additional capacity you can draw upon when life asks more of you.
Travel.
A demanding stretch at work.
An injury.
A long day outdoors.
A new sport.
Or simply the gradual effects of aging.
Balance Athletics focuses first on the fundamentals:
Build those well and you create more options for the future.
Build capacity before life asks you to use it.
BackCountry Personal Training FAQ
Do I need to already be in good shape?
No. Training is adapted to your current abilities, experience and limitations. Having an appropriate starting point is far more important than arriving fit.
Do you work with people over 60?
Absolutely. Older adults often have additional considerations involving joint health, previous injuries, balance, recovery and medical history. Experience and appropriate progression become increasingly important.
Can you work around previous injuries?
Yes. A significant part of my background involves rehabilitation and injury-conscious exercise programming. Training can be modified around limitations while still working toward improved strength and capacity.
Is everything customized?
Yes. Programming is based on your goals, training history, schedule, injuries or limitations and response to training. It is not a standardized workout handed to every client.
Can you help with hiking, skiing, golf or other recreational activities?
Absolutely. Strength, aerobic capacity, mobility, balance and movement can all be developed with the activities you care about in mind.
Do you offer partner or small-group training?
Yes. Individual, partner and small-group coaching options are available.
Build Capacity for the Long Game
You do not need fitness to become another full-time responsibility.
You need a thoughtful plan, experienced guidance and enough consistency to create meaningful change.
If you live in Backcountry or Highlands Ranch and are looking for individualized personal training, let’s start with a conversation.
